Clueless Reviews of Cheap Wines

I created this page to address questions I’ve received from friends and family since I started drinking an unhealthy (or healthy depending on who you talk to) amount of wine. I am huge fan of dead, fermented grape juice and, like wine legend Gary Vaynerchuk, a big believer that it should not be an inaccessible and elitist beverage to enjoy. As such, loved ones have started saying curious things like “You’re a pretentious asshole, but not about wine, what do you drink?” I’m honoured to share my oenophile experiences here. Ladies and gentlemen, this is what I drink. Stay tuned. This page will evolve as I try more wine. – MB

My First entry…

Finca Los Primos 2008 Malbec -

Need a cheap-as-dirt, go-to red as a daily drinker? If you lived in Argentina, this amazing value of a malbec would probably be that wine. However, we are in Canada, and as such, you can’t find a bottle of wine for under $8. It’s a crime. In Italy, Chile, Argentina and other wine producing nations, a solid quality bottle of vino can be found for $3-6. This $11 CDN bottle might not be cheap-as-terroir but still remains a steal – slightly acidic with a high alcohol content, this is the wine I enjoy on a regular basis. It’s affordable and has a strong, ripe fruit taste. Buy it by the case, let it breath for longer than normal and enjoy liberally. I do.

Prospect Winery Fats Johnson Pinot Noir -

This $19 CDN pinot noir is best served alongside food with a little punch. On its own, the Fats Johnson is a bit sour. With a spicy tomato-based pasta dish or rich turkey to back it up, this wine becomes ultra smooth, opening up with lots of fruit flavours. I don’t drink this one as often as my standard malbec but when I’m looking for an alternative to the heavier reds I prefer, I go here. Let it breathe. Serve with food.

finding cheap wine that’s good is just as hard in the u.s., even though we probably get it a little cheaper than you do. i wrote a little piece on finding cheap wine with some confidence on my blog: http://tinyurl.com/brokewino
