The Truth about Magazines? Or the Dying Cries of Dinosaurs?

by Mike on October 22, 2009

Yet another animated viral video is assaulting the internet. This video follows the Did you Know? viral sensation with a familiar formula – splash a buttload of facts across the screen, pair it with some optimistic music and make the words move to communicate the shear gravity of the possibly made-up information. Brilliant! This particular creation attempts to shore up the print magazine industry and, despite claiming all sorts of reassuring numbers I would love to be true, reeks of dirty advertising salesmanship. Can these numbers be valid? Please tell me yes. Because web magazines pay fuck-all for word rates and publish content with quality that wouldn’t look out of place in a third-grade dyslexic class. Of course, most snowboard magazines aren’t much better.  – Mike Berard

Well said. Mike that is. A lot of hot air I think. I will agree mags are for medium seekers, and during big events, they are a time capsule. I still have clippings from 9/11. But that is only nostalgic to those of us that still know what paper is. The coming generations may well not.

I am not ready to give up reading magazines, but it certainly isn’t because of statistics and flashing text. Am starting to despise these types of videos, they certainly do nothing to inspire with their hookie audio tracks.

Just like I prefer picking up an actual book to a Kindle, I think that magazines have their place. There is a TON of places to get information today, but I look forward to receiving my Ski Magazine and Vanity Fair subscriptions every month. There is still something to be said for actually flipping the pages.
